Hop On and Play: Staff Writer Chase Robinson details his top three video game releases of 2021, including “Metroid Dread,” “It Takes Two,” and “Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139…”

2021 has been an exciting year filled with an abundance of new video game releases. From single-player open-world RPGs to high-intensity multiplayer shooters, last year’s games offered something special to catch the attention of video game fanatics everywhere. In fact, some of the games that were released last year are not only good but could even be dubbed modern classics. Some trendsetting games released in the past year include “Deathloop,” “Halo Infinite,” “Psychonauts 2,” and “Far Cry 6.”  In addition, a number of indie games like “Death’s Door,” “Inscryption,” and “Valheim” have proven to be quite charming. However, there are three games this year that stand out from the rest: “Metroid Dread,” “It Takes Two,” and “Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139….”

“Metroid Dread” was released on the Nintendo Switch on Oct. 8, 2021, as a new addition to the “Metroid” series of games. “Metroid Dread” is a 2D action-adventure game that follows the traditional formula established when “Metroid” was first developed as a franchise. As in the original “Metroid,” you play as the protagonist, Samus Aran, as she fights extraterrestrial enemies. However, the new game introduces a novel plot, unique gameplay mechanics, and the best graphics that the series has seen. The critically acclaimed game is hugely popular among both old fans and new players.

“It Takes Two” was seemingly a fun yet forgetful game when it was first introduced. However, when the game was released on March 26, 2021, players were overwhelmed by its charm and polish. “It Takes Two” is a co-op action-adventure platformer where you play as two dolls trying to become human again. This concept proved to provide not only fun gameplay but also notable character development that actually evoked emotion throughout the gameplay experience.

“Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139…” is the newest installment in the “Nier/Drakengard” action RPG series of games, and like the others, it has provided a wonderful experience to players. Released on April 23, 2021, this new game was made available to the public as a remake of the original 2010 game “Nier Replicant,” where you immerse yourself into a story that is truly too grand to describe with words. This remake allowed a younger generation to experience an already great game but with improved graphics and mechanics. The story, music, and updated gameplay have captivated players like no other game last year, hence, its number one spot.

While these three games have especially stood out, there are numerous other games that are worth playing. In fact, there were so many noteworthy games of 2021 that listing them all would be a significant feat. So, whether player

s engage in one of the three aforementioned games or an alternative 2021 release, video game fanatics are sure to find gameplay to love.
