This past weekend showed us what was arguably one of the biggest cinematic events in the past couple of years. “Avengers: Endgame,” the fourth and final film of the Avengers franchise, officially hit theaters on April 26. With the last movie, “Infinity War,” leaving fans on a huge cliffhanger, the amount of excitement and anticipation surrounding “Endgame” was massive. But did it live up to everyone’s expectations? The general consensus from both fans and critics alike is a resounding “yes,” but the more I think back on the movie personally, the less satisfied I am with the conclusion to the Avengers series.

I know that I am in the minority with my opinion. Endgame currently has a 95 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and made $1.2 during its opening weekend. Clearly, it has lived up to the hype. And while I by no means think that is a bad or even mediocre movie, I couldn’t bring myself to enjoy it the way most everyone else seems to. There is no doubt that the cinematography, special effects and acting of the movie are exceptional. All of the technical aspects stand out even among many other Marvel films. But there were certain aspects of the story that I just couldn’t quite get behind.

 Overall, the new movie’s story isn’t bad. Most people thoroughly enjoyed it and my dissatisfaction probably stems more from personal preference rather than the objective quality. But there were so many plot holes and questionable moments that it took me out of the story at times. I kept waiting for the moment where I just forgot about it and was able to fully immerse myself in the movie, but for the most part that never happened. Every time I pushed the negative thoughts to the back of my mind, I would watch another scene that made me think, “That doesn’t seem right.” By the end of the movie I realized that I wasn’t even enjoying it that much, even though it seemed like everyone around me was.

For me, the best part of the movie was the finale. For a time, I was able to forget everything about the story and just enjoy watching all of the main characters in a huge, epic battle, and I could focus on marveling over all of the characters’ powers rather than the actual overarching plot. Even if you’re not sure about the rest of the movie, I would watch it just for this part. You don’t have to be a huge fan of the plot or even Marvel in general to get seriously hyped up at the dozens of characters coming together for one final battle. Despite the flaws that the rest of the movie has, it’s a great conclusion.

Chances are if you’re a fan of Marvel movies you’ll be a fan of “Endgame,” that is, if you haven’t already seen it. For most people it seems that its flaws are easy to look past, and that overall it is an enjoyable experience. Despite all of the complaints that I have I can say that I enjoyed at least some parts of it, enough that I liked the movie as a whole. Even if you’re like me and you weren’t a huge fan of some of the story, you’ll still probably like the ending, so you might as well watch it anyway.
