Without Much Noise, Suspenseful “Quiet Place” Takes In Big Audiences
“Silent film” is an uncommon term in the film industry nowadays but new movie, “A Quiet Place” has given the term a new meaning. The unconventional horror film has viewers sitting on the edge of their seats in suspense as the characters only offers a few words uttered throughout the entire movie.
While most people know John Krasinski as the character Jim from the TV show “The Office,” Krasinski stars as the lead role in the popular film. And beyond heroic acting duties, the multi-talented Krasinski also directed and co-wrote the screenplay for the movie. Krasinski hit the nail on the head with audiences as the fast-paced thriller quickly raked in $134 million at the 19-day mark. The massive revenue made from the debut of this film is particularly noteworthy since the movie only cost $17 million to make.
Krasinski starred alongside wife Emily Blunt and two younger co stars, Noah Jupe and Millicent Simmonds. Simmonds portrays Krasinski’s deaf daughter in the film and the actor is also deaf in real life. Krasinski believed it was important to hire a deaf actress for the film because he wanted to be able to accurately portray what life would be like if everybody had to live in silence.
The characters live in a dystopia where blind monsters with excellent hearing inhabit Earth. The monsters use sound to hunt down their prey and the characters cannot make any noise making the film almost silent. The movie does an excellent job of using silence to make the movie more suspenseful and entertaining even with 40 solid minutes of dead air.
The sequel is already in the works and will have Krasinski returning to work on the project for a second time. The sequel will not just focus on the main family but will also include what is happening in the world around them as the monsters multiply.
