Silver Stars Shine Bright on Friday Nights
As so many know, the Silver Stars are the popular dancing troupe attached with the North Atlanta’s band, the Marching Warriors. For many, the Stars’ halftime routine is a highlight for Warrior Friday night games. The members put in massive amounts of time practicing for their field shows and they say that after spending so much time together they have gone beyond mere troupe status to become a sisterhood of friends and passionate dancers.
There are many ways to describe the Silver Stars, but the main thing all members share is a strong sense of family. When asked to describe the North Atlanta Silver Stars with three words, a variety of emotions were offered. “We are family because we are close,” said junior Kennedy Scruggs. “We are vivacious because we are lively and fun, and we are helpful because we help each other grow as both people and dancers.”
The troupe is under the instruction of Coach Ebony Harris who works in conjunction with marching band director Adam Brooks.
This dance team may be “silver” for school spirit, but they are “gold” within their hearts. “It’s more than just dance. Between us there’s a sisterhood,” Scruggs said.
For team captain Azia Pittman, participation in the troupe is an art form and a creative outlet. “The fact that I can do something I love and bring such positive attention to my school means more than you can imagine.”
To become a part of such a select group, would-be Silver Stars auditioned in March. For tryouts there were around 30 girls who came out to fill the 11 team slots. “When I found out I made it, I was extremely ecstatic,” said senior Taylor Jones. “There was an incredible feeling of pride because I know what an honor it is to be a part of this.”
To get ready for this fall season of halftime shows, the team worked this summer starting in the end of July to work on techniques for flag not to mention all that goes into developing a highly choreographed 10-minute field show. “Even though it’s a lot of work it’s definitely worth it when the show comes out as something so strong,” Jones said.
Although being a Silver Star is fun, it’s far from easy. While the dancers perform their routines with precision and ease, most people don’t realize the amount of work they have put in beforehand. The dancers practice every day from 4 to 6:45 p.m. and many days they go much longer.
Being a Silver Star requires hard work, time management and a willing heart. As the Silver Stars dance together, they bond. And as they dance the deepen friendships among themselves, they also continue to dance their way into the the hearts of their fans within the North Atlanta community. Warriors Friday nights are always brighter when the Silver Stars come out.
