Just seven years ago, the North Atlanta lacrosse program did not even exist. Now, in the program’s seventh season, the team has secured a first-ever achievement: An area title.

On March 22, the team beat Newnan High School by the score of 15 to 5 to secure an Area 2 Region crown. En route to this program feat, the team notched a 14 and 4 regular season record including big wins over LAX powers Wesleyan and Etowah. “It’s been such a great season and now winning this area crown is just the icing on the cake,” said senior long stick midfielder Patrick Wilson.

Second-year Coach Patrick Cheney said the area win is just another accomplishment toward establishing a strong North Atlanta program. “We feel good about where we are but we can’t be content to rest on our laurels.”

Cheney established that the team still has to wade its way through a hard playoff schedule and to retool next year after losing key seniors Wilson, Thomas Muller, Ezekiel Day, Sean McLeod and Sterling Spiegl.

For the first playoff game the team must face off against Roswell. Ranked 23rd in the state, Roswell is a highly competitive team that could possibly cause our Warriors some trouble, but team captain Wilson does not seem fazed by the team’s high ranking. “They’re absolutely beatable,” he said. “If our offensive plays together and not afraid we will have no problem beating them.”

Cheney said the journey toward becoming a lacrosse power started during those lean initial years where the team struggled to get wins. Now, the hard work of the players and coaching staff is finally starting to pay off with one of the most rewarding seasons yet. Warrior lacrosse: An emerging LAX power.
