We enjoyed it then, but are we too old for trick-or-treating now?

The perfect time of year for free candy and laughs is right around the corner. Many students look forward to the Halloween holiday, but for different reasons. Depending on the person, one could be looking forward to Halloween because it means Christmas is near. However, some want the sheer excitement of dressing up as a character and running around the town being gifted candy. Despite this, in the eyes of many it seems that this generation is “getting too old” for trick or treating.

As teenagers grow up and adapt to social norms, dressing up for Halloween is slowly pushed out of the picture. It is up to those who defy these social norms to keep the practice of dressing up relevant within this generation, because being a kid at heart is totally acceptable in today’s society, just ask Mr. Antoine Everhart. (No shots, just appreciation!). “I’m dressing up as a football player,” said sophomore Kelley Estis. “But just to go to a party on Friday and Saturday, not because I want to.”

Other students at North Atlanta are also in spirit, by purchasing their costumes and laying out their plans ahead of time. “I’m going to dress up as a cat because cats are cute,” said junior Terriunna Washington.

It is these students that are the pride and joy of Halloween among teenagers, however along with these come the party poopers. The playful teasing of other students isn’t uncommon, especially around Halloween, but it just adds to the fun. “I’m not going to dress up because it’s corny and lame,” said sophomore Tylen Shelton. “But if you want to, do you.”

Not all students are drinking the Halloween costume enthusiasm and they fall into the solid “dressing up is immature” category. “It’s cool that they do it, but I think it’s childish,” said sophomore Iyanté Saunders.

There are many who think society’s “rule” concerning an age limits for trick-or-treating are bogus. And there are many in student ranks who are preparing to break this “rule” as Halloween is approaching. Whether it’s for free candy or just the thrill of dressing up, Halloween will be a time of spooks, fun and enjoyment. All you ghouls and ghosts: Have a safe and fun Halloween. Beware of the clowns, though!
