Travis Scott’s “Birds in the Trap” Showcases Eclectic Sounds

“Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight” is the second studio album by American hip-hop recording artist Travis Scott. It was released on Sept. 2 after being pushed back several times by Scott, who hails from Houston. But nonetheless, “LaFlame” came through for his fans in the highly anticipated sophomore album.

Much like Frank Ocean’s new album, “Birds in the Trap” features multiple artists who add a whole new dynamic to the project. Atlanta natives should be glad to hear that hip-hop legend Andre 3000 is featured on the first track “the ends.” In addition, Scott recorded songs with Kid Cudi, Kendrick Lamar, Young Thug, and a wide variety of other acclaimed artists. To top it all of, the album was executively produced by T.I., a staple in the “rap game.”

While sporting a very unusual title, Scott’s second album also has two singles. One titled “wonderful,” with The Weeknd and “pick up the phone,” with Young Thug. Both were released and generated huge amounts of hype among his fans, so much so that the album debuted at Number One1 on the Billboard 200, selling 88,000 album-equivalent units and 53,000 copies in the first week, according to Wikipedia. As for the title name, Scott stated that “’Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight’ is basically about all my friends and growing up here.”

“I’m not saying that it’s a trap, we not in the projects, but it’s like a social trap. It’s a social connection trap from what you want to do and how you want to express yourself. I feel like everyone just gets constricted by his or her parents or just life,” he said.

From a musical standpoint, Scott mixes the normal bass-heavy trap beats in and out of every song, but no two songs are alike. “I enjoyed the album, especially the many different vibes given off from the songs, like the major difference between ‘way back’ and ‘guidance’,” said junior Tyler Williams.

“Birds in the Trap” was received well by the public and critics. Scott Glaysher of HipHopDx said, “There isn’t a ton of lyrical progression for La Flame on this album. But the soothing digitized finish and woven through the most polished contemporary drums in Hip Hop, it’s truly hard to hate.”

So for music junkies, “Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight” definitely needs to be listened to for a “rollercoaster ride of nice beats, bars and just a great experience overall,” said junior Zack Bennett.

So, perhaps the best way to sum things up is the way the artist himself would: “IT’S LIT!”
