Presidential Debate One is Over: Who’s Winning Now?
The reviews of the first presidential debate seemed to be polarized. Despite that, most polls revealed that Hillary Clinton won the debate. This popular opinion is based off of the evidence that in the beginning of the debate, Donald Trump gave Clinton no ground on major issues like jobs and the economy, and Clinton’s email scandal controversy. However, at the mention of Trump’s unreleased tax returns, Clinton let Americans assume the worst by pointing out that Trump could be a tax evader. This discourse seemed to have upset Trump and sent him down a slippery slope of empty explanations and false statements.
In a recent Fox News poll it was established that Clinton had re-established her lead as a frontrunner in this election. It was surprising however to see Clinton use her full arsenal of personal attacks on Trump in the first debate, from his tax returns to allegedly harassing former the former Miss Universe. The lack of questions about her emails and the Benghazi incident were disturbingly absent. Somehow she was able to avoid the fact that she initially lied about the deaths of four Americans and that she used an unencrypted server to send classified information.
A very sensitive side to the debate was the questions regarding race relations in America. Lester Holt even said that Americans believe that race relations are the worst that they have been in decades. To this Clinton replied by accusing Trump’s advocacy for the controversial crime-evasion “stop and frisk” policy was racist in intent. The thinking behind the policy is to detain and check a suspicious or dangerous looking person and search them for illegal weapons or contraband. Statistics showed that more Hispanics and African Americans were stopped.
In more recent news, Trump was found to have lost $915 million in 1995 exempting him from paying taxes for 18 years under United States law. In addition Hillary’s email scandal has resurfaced with a likely indictment for obstruction of justice by the Congress as well as an indictment or resignation of FBI director Comey.
The country may turn from a democracy to an idiocracy soon; whom will we choose to “save us”?
