“Brace for Impact!” Sully Movie Lands in Theaters
The recently released film “Sully” depicts the headline-grabbing event when U.S. Airways Flight 1549 crashed into the Hudson River in New York City on Jan. 15, 2009. After the crash, the plane’s widely applauded pilot Chesley Sullenberger was feted as a national hero. But in the subsequent weeks, he was questioned by federal aviation authorities about whether he could have made another, perhaps less audacious flying choice.
Check out the trailer of this movie: It captivates, invigorates and offers plenty of suspense. And the movie – a film that compellingly presents the real facts behind the heroic event – goes far beyond the trailer to provide an entertaining viewing.
The movie tells the back story that most did not know about Sullenberger. In the immediate aftermath of the water landing, he was celebrated as a hero. Little did the public know that the pilot was exhaustively questioned by Federal Aviation Administration officials about his split-second decision-making that accompanied landing a jet full of more than 150 passengers in the immediate wake of duel engine failure.
When I took in the film, the theater was probably three quarters full and it was clear that all there were engrossed in the movie. The entire time the movie was playing there wasn’t a peep from the audience apart from the moments when laughter was called for.
The movie was impressive in how it accurately showed Sullenberger’s perspective and the post-crash ordeal he went through. Miraculously, all passengers survived the crash. And the Clint Eastwood-directed fill successfully has survived the possible pitfalls of cinematic debut: Both critics and audiences have called “Sully” a winner.
Overall, this is a movie that anyone can watch and you feel good by the time it ends. Check out “Sully” while you can before another movie lands in the theater to take its place. Reviewer’s Assessment: 9 out of 10 stars.
