The Truth About Kahoot
In the dreaded hours of the school morning many students slump themselves into their chairs with the hopes of achieving a few more moments of sleep. But when the neon luminescence of Kahoot appears upon the Promethean board in front of the class, it becomes difficult to stay asleep without feeling desire to play the educational, yet fun quiz.
Despite some of its negative attributes, Kahoot has been testified by many students that the online quizzing system is not only a well-crafted mechanism similar to the likes of caffeine, but also a key component of studying for upcoming quizzes in class. “I love Kahoot. It makes my school day much more fun and it’s a good way to review content while having competition inside the class,” said junior Will Butler. “In fact, one of my favorite high school experiences was in freshman year when my favorite teacher and some of my classmates came up with the phrase, ‘Vamos a – jugar Kahoot!’”
Although Butler may have over-exaggerated the effects of Kahoot, students will continue to agree that the game is an immediate stress reliever in the harsh reality that is school. Much of Kahoot’s use primarily consists of content review for students to better understand the topic at hand. Furthermore, some teachers use the interactive quiz game to give their students quizzes or even extra credit opportunities. “It breaks the monotony of class. Also, students love technology so allowing them to use their cell phones delights them,” said physics teacher Bhagyalakshmi Gopalsingh.
Despite such enthusiasm about Kahoot, there are a few “controversial” components that accompany the several positive aspects of the online quiz game. For example, the option to type in one’s own name into the pool of participants seems to have been taken advantage of by some students. Titles such as toenail, toothbrush, Harambe, and some risqué choices that are unprintable in a student newspaper somehow mischievously make their way to the board.
Relinquishing the singular negative aspect of Kahoot to the subconscious, it seems Kahoot is a beneficial online source of on-hands interaction for all high school students. Not only does Kahoot achieve the vital task of brightening students’ days, it also points students in the right trajectory to ace those dreaded tests and quizzes that forever lie ahead.
So, cue that Kahoot music! (Can you hear it?) It’s time to play Kahoot!
