Frank Ocean Isn’t Dead?
The restless search for Frank Ocean has finally concluded. The famed American R & B recording artist has crawled out from under a rock and finally released not one, but two albums within the span of two days. The winner of the 2011 GQ Rookie of the Year award hadn’t released a hint of new music for the past four years, with his most recent album being “channel ORANGE,” which was released in 2012.
Fans throughout the world kept the album on repeat, hoping the soulful artist would “drop some new heat.” Their wishes came true on Aug.19 with the release of “Endless,” a 44-minute visual album compiled of recorded tracks from 2013-16, directed by Ocean himself.
The next day, “Blonde” was released exclusively on Apple Music. The album was originally supposed to be released in July 2015, however it was delayed with no clear explanation. Ocean’s followers were upset, but the album proved to be worth the wait. With multiple features including hip-hop legends Andre 3000 and Pharrell Williams, “Blonde” is a “masterpiece that has been waited on for so long,” said junior Tyler Williams.
With a total of 17 tracks, Ocean blends soulful and melodious beats with deep lyrics that would put the happiest person “in their feelings.” Instrumentation was also widespread in the entire album, much to the joy of musical fans. “Nikes” sounds like nothing he ever made before, “Ivy’s” guitar riff is gorgeous, and the production on ‘Pink + White’ is beautiful,” said junior Luke Sweeting.
His album was received well by many critics, who ultimately agreed that it was a complete beauty to the ears. Tim Jonze, popular music critic, hailed it as “one of the most intriguing and contrary records ever made” in his review for The Guardian.
“Blonde” debuted at number one on the Billboard charts, as well as the Hip-Hop and R&B charts. These opinions didn’t differ to those of many North Atlanta students. “I liked the album because he gave vocals, bars and spoke about some serious topics that are going on, so I give it a 10/10,” said junior Jarred Kemp.
Many students, and other music enthusiasts heavily recommend this album, if one is in need of a genuine music experience. “I recommend this album because people need to stop listening to trash with bad messages and listen to something good for once,” said junior Ben Peters.
