Ready, Set, Pokemon Go

North Atlanta students are searching everywhere for Pokemon on our vast campus.

Mobile gaming has come a long way: from Tetris, the first game ever displayed on a cell phone, to the more recent Angry Birds and Candy Crush. Most likely, you have heard of a game called Pokemon Go. Pokemon Go was released on July 6 this year and has exploded to a new, nation-wide trend. Not only has its popularity multiplied, it has broken the Apple all-time record of most downloads in its first week than any other app in history. It was no surprise that the trend was just as strong among students at North Atlanta.

Freshmen George Mori and Bennett Speir weigh in on this intriguing, up-and-coming game. Mori keyed in on his favorite part of the game. “It’s the ability to find them in the real world,” he said. “You’re not just sitting at a desk.”

Both Mori and Speir expressed that the reason this app is such a success, is because it involves movement. “It’s not like you just use a controller to run around. You actually are running,” Mori said.

Bennett said the school’s interior is not exactly conducive to Pokemon fun. The real action is outside. Favorite spots are near the campus lake and tennis courts. Speir is something of a Pokemon fanatic and he admits to playing the game up to four times a day. “I try not to let it get in the way of my school work. I try,” he said.

But what leads to so much devotion? Where does this obsession come from? “You have to catch them all,” said Mori.

This enthusiastic statement was immediately followed by his rendering of the Pokemon theme song.

This game is constantly rising in fame and is continuing to build a strong reputation in the world of apps. While it’s all fun and games for now, make sure you look both ways before you run to catch a Dragonite.
