Starting the Day the Starbucks Way

Freshman Sadie Stovin is a major supporter of the Starbucks coffee-craze.

There is a short list of the absolute necessities that humans need to survive and function properly. The list includes clean water, nutritious food, shelter, clothing, medical supplies, and a venti vanilla latte with two extra shots of espresso. Wait, that last one might be in the wrong list, unless, that is, the list belongs to Sadie Stovin.

This bubbly freshman credits the drink for keeping her awake during class, as it should. Stovin’s signature Starbucks drink packs a heavy punch of 300 mg of caffeine, the same amount that would be found in nine cans of Coca-Cola. That might seem like a crazy amount, especially to drink every morning, but for Stovin, it’s just enough. “It wakes me up and gives me a boost of energy, but mostly it’s a habit that makes me happy,” she said.

Many of Stovin’s friends share her same love for Starbucks, including freshman Sydney Glazman who always orders an iced green tea to start her day. Although green tea is much less caffeinated than her friend’s latte, the fact that she gets it every morning might still classify it as addicting. “You’ll never see us in the morning without Starbucks in our hands,” joked Glazman.

Besides the jitters, the only negative side effect for these girls and other fellow coffee addicts is the toll it takes on their wallets. Such magical drinks come at a price, and after 180 days of orders, that price can surpass $1,000 per person. Stovin understands this struggle because she pays for it all herself. “It’s worth it to have, but it does add up quickly,” she said.

But despite the cost, Starbucks remains a morning favorite for students across the world and will continue to bring joy to all those who sip on that famous green straw. And that holds true whether you’re a senior or sophomore – or tall, grande, venti or trenta.
