Seniors Rack Up College Scholarships and Acceptances

Seniors Augustin Jimenez and Sydne Scales received some of the most prestigious academic scholarships in the country.

High-powered scholars. That’s the best description for the graduating Class of 2016 at North Atlanta High School. More than 380 strong and the largest-ever senior class at the school, the number of scholarships and honors Class of 2016 seniors has secured keeps growing by the day.

By the end of April, North Atlanta’s senior class has earned more than $4 million in terms of in-state scholastic possibilities. Some 53 percent is eligible for the state’s HOPE scholarship and 21 percent of senior class is eligible for the Zell Miller Hope Scholarship. As for prestigious in-state colleges, 50 North Atlanta students have been accepted into the University of Georgia and 21 have been admitted to Georgia Tech.

North Atlanta is home to the oldest International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme in the Southeast. This year there are 130 IB candidates who are testing to receive the IB diploma, a figure that represents a new high for the school.

North Atlanta’s Class of 2016 has impressed Ivy League colleges as six of the eight Ivies have extended admittances to Warrior scholars. The nation’s military academies have noted the school’s excellence and both the Naval and Air Force academies have admitted North Atlanta students. Clarke McCollum will study at the Air Force Academy in the fall.

North Atlanta senior Sydne Scales is a Gates Millennium Scholar and will attend Georgetown University. North Atlanta’s Posse Scholar is Agustin Jimenez who will study at Boston University.

In the fall, Warriors will study at some of the nation’s most noteworthy colleges and universities. Among the schools are Harvard University, Yale University, Brown University, Boston University, Hofstra University, Georgetown University, Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania, Smith College, Fisk University, George Washington University, Emory University, Stanford University, University of Texas, SCAD-Hong Kong, Marymount Manhattan College, Xavier University, Bard College in Berlin, Germany, University of Tennessee, University of the South, Fisk Washington and Lee, Southern Methodist University, Virginia Tech, University of Arizona, St. John’s University, Barnard College, University of Colorado-Boulder, Spelman College and Vanderbilt University.

School leaders say the quality of Class of 2016 admittances reflect the ongoing academic strength of North Atlanta. Vice Principal Jill Stewart is especially proud of these students’ achievements. “It is a reflection on the academic excellence that we’ve achieved through hard work and dedication,” she said.

North Atlanta is an Atlanta Public School based in Buckhead. The school, home to more than 1,700 students, is a leader in performing arts, athletics and academics.
