Mixed Feelings Towards “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”
“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” is the long awaited sequel to “Man of Steel” from director Zack Snyder. It follows the story of how a depressed old man who beats up poor people battles a walking Jesus metaphor because an evil bald man told them to.
Let me just say this right off the bat “Dawn of Justice” is kind of a mess, a sometimes explosively fun mess, but a mess just the same. The pacing is really strange with scenes starting and ending without warning as well as many other scenes going on way too long to the point where it becomes incredibly awkward. The plot is completely nonsensical and collapses under scrutiny.
This film is also dark, extremely dark, like they took the general darkness of “Man of Steel” and dumped black paint on it and then dumped it into a tar pit after which blotted out the sun for good measure. People die, distasteful 9/11 allusions are everywhere, and usually joyful and fun characters like superman became almost as angry and depressed as batman, or all the parents who were dragging their crying kids out of the theater after realizing this wasn’t another lighthearted marvel movie.
Other characters in the movie also aren’t the best. For an example the main villain Lex Luthor lacks any cohesive motivation for his hate of superman. First it seems like wants to protect humanity, then it’s because he doesn’t like god, then later he hates superman because his daddy never loved him and most of the other characters don’t fare any better.
I could really go on and on about this movie. It’s really not a great movie. And what’s strange about this is despite all its problems I honestly really enjoyed it. The action is fun and grand. The cinematography is beautiful, solidifying Zack Snyder’s position as the definition of style over substance. It was really cool to see some of the most iconic characters of all time team up. Additionally, the performances are for the most part great as the actors put their all into becoming these mythical characters. Still “Batman v Superman” is not for everybody and if you hate the dark superhero thing or want to see an upbeat movie than this is not for you. But if you just want to see a dumb fun flick about superheroes beating the crap out of each other, then you will get exactly what you want.
