School Officers Promote Safety

Fighting crime on the streets is nothing compared to the much more challenging battle of understanding the minds of teenagers. No one does this job better than School Resource Officers (SROs) Daniel McFarlan and Michael Wulf. Their favorite part of the job is what you would expect – working with kids.

Wulf and McFarlan are in the middle of their third year on the North Atlanta beat. They are seasoned veterans that did patrol work in Buckhead and downtown Atlanta with the Atlanta Police Department (APD). Following their interest in working with teenagers they have become full time SROs at North Atlanta.

The officers regard themselves as mentors to all the students here, and their biggest concern is their safety and well-being. “We provide safety and security for the students and the school,” McFarlan said.

“We consider ourselves a liaison between APS and the Atlanta Police Department,” said Wulf.

With every job comes challenges, and our officers are faced with many. Their biggest frustration is that they constantly warn of the dangers of drugs and alcohol, yet abuse still occurs. “We talk to students about the dangers of drugs, but problems continue to happen,” said McFarlan.

Next time you have a problem that you can’t quite grasp, just talk to an SRO. Whether it be patrolling the halls or teaching teens how to stay safe, they are here to help.
