Fantasy Football Transforms Football Sundays

Draft Kings

Many students spend their Sundays hanging out with friends, relaxing, or – this is high school, right? – catching up on some homework. I spend my fall Sundays with my friends Tom Brady, Julio Jones and Adrian Peterson. From 1 to 7:30 p.m. every Sunday, I feverishly switch between NFL games on TV and my fantasy website.

Fantasy? That’s right. My Sunday sport of choice is fantasy football. For those who don’t know, fantasy football is a game where football fans can join online leagues and “draft” their favorite players to compete against their friends’ “fantasy” teams. Constant research is required. I spend time each week researching breakout players, proposing trades, and picking up undrafted prospects from the waivers.

Fantasy has seen a recent rise in popularity due to new services like “DraftKings” and “Fanduel.” Unlike normal leagues in which you compete against friends for bragging rights or a small prize over the whole season, these leagues require a small entry fee and pit you against the masses for one week only. If you come out near the top, you can win crazy sums of money.

Fantasy football changes Sundays for fans. You start paying closer attention to the league and it gives you a better understanding of the game. For me, a win for my fantasy team means just as much, if not more, than a Falcons win. In fact, I have found myself cheering against the Falcons in some dire fantasy situations.

Fantasy is a great way to liven up football season, and if you have some friends that are fans, consider starting a league, or if you don’t want to make a commitment, try a one week league if you are confident.

Now about the Falcons winning the Super Bowl. That’s the ultimate fantasy, right?
