The Ultimate Spirit Now Grows Strong at North Atlanta

Are you looking for the ultimate sport? You could do no better than playing Ultimate Frisbee, a quickly growing sport that has its very own club right here at North Atlanta. The school’s Ultimate Club plays on the practice field next to the parking garage on Wednesdays from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

Never played the game? Think of Ultimate as a cross between football and soccer. Similar to football, you attempt to score in the end zone and run routes but play is constantly moving like in soccer. Also, you are not allowed to move while you hold the frisbee – or “disc” in Ultimate parlance. And because any incompletion results in a turnover, there’s plenty of running around.

All students are welcome to join, whether they are veterans of the sport or first-time players. “We want to create a community where people of all grades and experience levels can come and learn the sport,” said senior Bethany Bell, the team’s captain.

The school’s team is growing and has reached around 25 members. Those on the team plan on participating in several tournaments and games during the spring season. Down the road, there are even hopes to get the sport recognized as an official high school sport. “We want to move beyond people thinking that a frisbee is just something thrown around at the beach or thrown out for your dog,” Bell said.
