Atlanta Hawks Soar to Dizzying NBA Heights

The starting five for the Atlanta Hawks.

The Atlanta Hawks have taken the nation by surprise. With the most wins in the NBA, the fifth-longest winning streak in NBA history, and two more sellouts at Phillips Arena than the past two seasons combined, it’s safe to say that the team is changing the game.

If you weren’t a fan of the Hawks before, you most likely are now. The coaching staff, led by head coach Mike Budenholzer, has pushed the team in new ways. The crowds in Phillips Arena are buzzing with spirit. More important than anything, sports commentators have noted the team plays selflessly. A team without a “superstar” is doing just fine with a starting line-up that plays pure team ball.

What truly sets the Hawks apart is the wide range of talent within the team’s starting five players. Paul Millsap, Jeff Teague, Al Horford, Kyle Korver and DeMarre Carroll all average between 11 and 17 points, making it difficult for the opposing teams to focus on stopping one or two primary scorers. “Give me four or five really good players over one superstar. I will take that any day,” Millsap said during a press conference.

Another unique quality the Hawks team members possess are their close bonds as teammates on the court. Their levels of trust and unity are through the roof and it shows. “I have been on some really good teams,” Korver said during an interview with The Washington Post, “but there is something different about this group. There is a lightness to our spirit. We’re just out there having fun.”

The energy within each fan seated in the Phillips Arena is something that is totally new to the Hawks. In seasons past, the spirit among the crowds was lacking, and Hawks fans sometimes were even being outnumbered by fans of opposing teams. But that unfortunate period is sure to never be seen again. Now, tickets are selling out in record times. Everyone in Atlanta wants to see what the Hawks are all about.

The team’s success has had a major impact on the city, the fans, and, of course, on the players. “We’ve never been through this. It will be interesting to see. We have a tight group here, and as long as we stay together, we’ll see where this goes,” Horford said in a recent post-game interview.

The hope is that the Hawks can keep up their success. The fans are sure to be cheering them along every game. A deep run into the playoffs and possibly an appearance in the NBA finals could be just around the corner.
