North Atlanta’s gymnastics team is officially back on the mat, refusing to let a delayed start hinder their season. This year, the team welcomes back all gymnasts except for last season’s seniors. As of this year, the team has been adjusting to some new logistical changes after former coach Liz Archer stepped down from the position. Nonetheless, the determined team of five has already shown remarkable dedication and commitment to the season ahead.
Coming off of a high last season with three preliminary qualifiers for the first time since 2018, this year’s transition hasn’t been without its challenges. Parting from Cobb Challengers, their former practice facility, the team now trains at Buckhead Gymnastics under Coach Christy Campbell. Composed of multi-sport athletes and full-time gymnasts, the team only practices once a week on Sundays to accommodate for the athlete’s outside schedules. However, with each gymnast having an established background in gymnastics, routines are made independently based on skills they are familiar with. Despite this year’s identical roster, the returning five gymnasts have been resilient in navigating this season’s changes together. ‘’It’s been tough,’’ said sophomore Samantha Salzman. ‘’But Coach Regan’s support and the team’s bond has kept us strong.’’
So far, the gymnasts have been proving themselves at the competitive scene despite having only five competitors. Since the season’s commencement, the team has competed in meets at Westminster, Lovett, and World of Gymnastics and Cheer, placing fourth overall in each. As a whole, the team has showcased routines in all four events- bars, floor, beam, and vault- but individually, most of the gymnasts typically perform in only two or three events. Leighton Snider, a sophomore on the team, competes in just floor and beam, but recently, she’s received recognition for her impressive double twist, scoring a nine out of ten on her floor routine. ‘’It was a major milestone in my gymnastics career,’’ said Snider. ‘’And being surrounded by my teammates made it really special.’’
With the season only halfway done, there are high expectations for the future. Considering their success thus far, the team hopes to secure a spot in the two upcoming meets, with the ultimate goal being to qualify for state. The girls have faith that through support from both Cambpell and Athletic Director Andre Regan, they can finish the season in triumph. ‘’This year has allowed for many opportunities of growth,’’ said Regan. ‘’Hopefully helping us acquire a state qualification.’’
Even in the face of uncertainty and unexpected adversities, NAHS’s resilient gymnast’s have leaped past the limits. Despite what the future holds, the team is proud of their triumph thus far and have hope for what lies ahead.
