When you think of food, what comes to mind? For most, it’s comfort food. The smooth and creamy mac and cheese recipe from their grandma, or the apple pie recipe that has been passed down in the family for years. For others, it’s an adventure. Students have been all around the world and tried all the unique foods from around the world. The answers to the most unusual foods they had tried ranged from bizarre to downright daring. From rabbit liver to cooked goat, these students are daredevils.
When you travel to different countries, there are many new and different restaurants, but there are also some similar places such as Burger King, McDonald’s, and Taco Bell. Micheal Robinson, a World History teacher at North Atlanta, tried chicken feet in San Fransisco’s Chinatown. He described it as really bony, not a lot of meat, and containing a sweet barbecue sauce. He thought it was an interesting experience but does not want more of it. “I would probably not try it again. Once was enough,” said Robinson.
Some people might think all these foods are weird and unusual, but for others it is a tradition. Samantha Salzman, a sophomore, visited the Philipines, and there she tried goats with her family. She was meeting all her family, which was a special event, calling for the goat. They killed one of the family goats and proceeded to cook it together as a family. Salzman reports being really scared but she pushed through because her mom wanted her to try it. “I would not eat it again because it had a really weird texture to it, and I felt bad for the goat,” said Salzman.
Traditions from the family and traditions from the country. There are many different traditions from around the world considering food that many people want to partake in. An example is Scarlet Kirkland. She loves to travel around the world with her family, trying new foods. One of the most memorable foods she has tried was rabbit liver from Spain. In Spain they have a traditional dish called Paella. It is a paella with shrimp, rice, vegetables, and of course the rabbit liver. “It tasted like dry and overcooked steak, but I was expecting it to taste like chicken,” said Scarlet.
Most of these interesting foods were not well loved by the students, but it is the experience that makes it worth it. The memories that are made on every trip and learning new traditions from other countries, and being able to share them with others. These are experiences that they will never forget.
