Coming off a lackluster 10-15 finish last season, the North Atlanta girls’ basketball team knew something had to change to turn things around and make a serious run in the state tournament. Longtime teacher and coach, Coach Credit, made it a priority to reload with younger talent, ensuring the team would have a strong foundation for the future. The 2024-25 roster now features six underclassmen, including three freshmen which shows that Coach Credit achieved his goal, as those six players make up half the entire team. Heading into the season the team had high expectations even with their new region, as they now had a mix of young talent and experienced upperclassmen.
The season began and it did not go as planned, the women’s team dropped their first 3 games and started at 0-3. But this stretch didn’t discourage the team at all, as it fueled them towards success even more. Senior center Katherine Moss made sure the team knew that they couldn’t hang their heads, they needed to keep grinding at practice in order to flip the script. “We began to work harder, and the results of the games took care of themselves,” said Moss.
The girls’ team won three of their next five games and started to build confidence, but just when things seemed to be turning around, everything fell apart. The Lady Dubs dropped 12 of their next 14 games, with nearly everything going against them. Many of their opponents were ranked in the state, making an already tough stretch even harder. Still, senior guard Siena Schettino never let the losing streak break their team chemistry, constantly encouraging her teammates to keep pushing forward. “Although our record isn’t the best, I’ve just been enjoying my senior season with the girls I love most,” said Schettino.
With the region tournament approaching, this may be one last opportunity for the Seniors to lead their team to a playoff appearance. To reach the state tournament the girls must win 4 games in the region tournament before playing in the region championship. If they win the region championship game they will receive an automatic bid to the state tournament, this would be a huge accomplishment for the program as they have not reached the playoffs since the 2010-2011 season. Coach Credit knows that if they could make the playoffs this year it would send a strike of confidence into the entire program. “Making the playoffs is the goal, I know our girls can get it done,” said coach Credit.
With the region tournament ahead, the Lady Dubs remain determined. Despite setbacks, their resilience and chemistry could spark a historic playoff run, redefining their program’s future. Can the lady hoopers make it out of the tournament? How does the future of the program look? Only time will tell for the Warriors.
