Emerging from the ashes of three seasons under .500 and a Superbowl loss that every Atlanta resident would love to forget, the Falcons have been out for blood 10 games into the season. With a record of 6 and 4, Atlanta leads the NFC South, racking up big wins against the Eagles, Buccaneers, and Cowboys. Each game has felt electric and every play has made a statement, but the Falcons have a long way to go until they can call the season a success.
So far, the Dirty Birds have looked like a brand-new team, probably because they essentially are one. On top of the firing of head coach Arthur Smith and the signing of Raheem Morris, the Falcons also brought along a new offensive coordinator, an experienced quarterback, three new wide receivers, an all-star safety, and a veteran outside linebacker, culminating in an eventful offseason. These new players have immediately made an impact, especially quarterback Kirk Cousins and wide receiver Darnell Mooney. Combined with the consistent play of wide receiver Drake London, running back Bijan Robinson, and safety Jessie Bates, the Falcons have built a stout roster of dynamic playmakers. “I think that we have one of the best rosters in football”, said senior Henry Katz. “Arthur and Terry worked their magic in the offseason.”
Typically, with a roster full of new players, it’s hard to work out the chemistry. At times, this phenomenon has been an issue for the Falcons. However, they have still managed to stay two games above .500, at 6 wins and 4 losses just over halfway through the season. Of those 6 are some of the most exciting Falcons victories in recent history like two nail-biters against the Eagles and Buccaneers that both ended in game-winning drives late in the fourth. “Like any Falcons season, there have been plenty of ups and downs,” said junior Cameron Louie. “Many times they have kept me on the edge of my seat late in the game, but many times they have also got the victory.”
It’s been exciting so far, but the Dirty Birds still have a long road ahead of them. The 5 and 5 Broncos are next up with a tough pass defense, meaning that the Birds will have to rely on Bijan Robinson, Tyler Allgeier, and the run. After that, the Chargers, Vikings, and Commanders are among the more formidable opponents left to get past. The defense will be key to staying on top of the division and achieving a playoff berth. “Our offense has had to save us continuously throughout the season”, said senior Tucker Heaton. “The defense has to lock in and step it up if we are gonna win.”
I think I speak for all Falcons fans when I say that this season has been one to remember. However, the whistle hasn’t been blown yet and the endzone is still a long way away. The Dirty Birds will need to do whatever it takes to win, but most importantly, RISE UP!
