With the recent promotion of Principal Curtis Douglass to Cluster Superintendent, North Atlanta High School embarks on a new journey under the leadership of interim principal Dr. Angela Mitchell. A familiar face in the halls of North Atlanta, Mitchell brings 12 years of experience as an assistant principal and an impressive background in public education to her new role.
Dr. Mitchel’s career in education spans over 24 years. She started her public school career as a mathematics teacher at Booker T. Washington High School. In 2008, she came to North Atlanta as the instructional coach before becoming an assistant principal. “It feels amazing to transition from assistant principal to interim principal,” Mitchell stated. “I feel like I know this school front and back and I am so grateful for this opportunity.”
Her interim tenure, set to last through May, comes with the option to apply for the permanent position at the end of the school year. In the meantime, Dr. Mitchell is focused on making the transition as seamless as possible for both faculty and students alike. Her main priority will be maintaining the key initiatives North Atlanta has already put into place for this year, such as emphasizing attendance and personalized learning. “My number one priority is to make sure everything is seamless and feels like the same school it was a month ago,” she said.
Principal Douglass, who led North Atlanta for 11 years, left an undeniable impact on the school. He greeted each and every student he passed with a smile and wave and strived to ensure the school ran as smoothly as possible. “One thing I really admired about Principal Douglass is whenever there was a difficult situation he stayed very level headed and calm,” said Dr. Mitchell. “Of all the qualities he had, that is the one I want to emulate the most.”
While Mr. Douglass will undoubtedly be missed, both students and staff are excited to see the positive changes that will come under Dr. Mitchell’s leadership. “I think Dr. Mitchell is a great choice to be interim principal,” said IB History teacher Courtney McGhee. “She has been nothing but a great support system for me since I came to North Atlanta three years ago.”
As North Atlanta embarks on this new chapter, the community congratulates Dr. Douglass on his promotion and looks forward to Dr. Mitchell’s leadership. As Cluster Superintendent for the North Atlanta cluster, Douglass will remain connected to the school he led for over a decade. Meanwhile, excitement and optimism surround Dr. Mitchell as she steps into this new role with her deep knowledge of the Warrior community. Congratulations, Dr. Mitchell!
