Everybody knows that amid the anxieties of life, a quick nature walk can go a long way. As more exams and due dates are added to the calendar, many of the Dubs feel they need a break from city life to emerge into the trails of Georgia. Now, as of this year, one can find the official Hiking Club on the long list of clubs North Atlanta has to offer. Two sophomore girls discovered their passion for hiking and were eager to share their newfound love for nature with friends and classmates. Besides, who doesn’t want another excuse to get away on the weekend?
Beginning in August of 2024, sophomore Adelaide Middleton began brainstorming her aspirations for the newborn club: adventurous excursions, spending quality time with friends, and community service. Turning goals from the pen and paper into reality comes with its fair share of challenges, so why not have a buddy to do it with? Middleton introduced the idea to sophomore Rowenna Dawson and received an instant “YES!” Together, they brainstormed a way to combine earning service hours with exploring. “I remember going on hikes with my family and seeing plastic wrappers and water bottles scattered along the trails,” said Middleton. “So, we decided to bring trash bags and gloves to help keep our community’s trails beautiful.”
After days of collaboration and discussing new ideas, the girls were ready to present the idea to the perfect sponsor for the job. Known for her mentorship and community involvement, they believed AP Language and Composition teacher Erin Turner was the right choice. From there, the team focused on planning the meetings and spreading the word. “From the very beginning I had full confidence these girls were going to be successful in their vision,” said Turner. “I was only there to sign the papers!”
Soon enough, the halls of North Atlanta were filled with excitement for the new Hiking Club. The first hike was held on November 10 at Sweetwater Creek State Park. Although the weather and long drive out of the city created some difficulties, the first hike was a resounding success. The group navigated their way through the rocks and hills of the park and left with overflowing bags of trash. Freshman Zoe Piernik attended another hike in Lithia Springs, turning out to be an afternoon of fresh air and fun. “What’s better than being outdoors away from the hustle of school, spending time with friends, and getting some exercise?” said Piernik.
When life gets hectic, it often feels as if your bed begins calling your name. But, after a couple of hours of chit-chat, breezy mountain air, and a rush of endorphins, you’ll feel good as new. The North Atlanta Hiking Club offers more than just a hike – it’s an opportunity to recharge, connect with others, and explore the great outdoors.
