This year in college football is like no other. Shocking wins against top teams from Ole Miss, Georgia Tech, and Vanderbilt have resulted in their goalposts coming down. Fans rushed the field, climbed on top of the goalpost, ripped it down with all their might, and dragged them out. After the magnificent win settles in, the SEC presents the school with a daunting fine. As much as security attempted to prevent the rushing of their field, it was an inevitable reaction to such wins. With unexpected losses and wins left and right, a pattern of unpredictable college football has emerged in the past year.
On October 5th, Vanderbilt emerged from the darkness and defeated the number one team, at the time, 40-35. Vanderbilt is a team that is often overlooked, and this win shocked not only their fans, but rivals around the country. IB Literature teacher Carla Mills was found boasting around in her Vanderbilt sweatshirt the day following this game alongside many other Vandy fans. “It’s about time,” said Mills, “Vandy rarely gets this opportunity!”
On November 9th, Georgia Tech fought intensely against the Miami Hurricanes and came out with a 28-23 dub. Consequently, the goalposts immediately hit the ground seconds after the field was rushed. Miami, who was undefeated and basking in their glory, was surprised to see the Yellow Jackets come in and attack. Junior Eve Heller, whose sister attends Georgia Tech, was amongst the ecstatic fans not expecting this win. “I’m not really into football,” said Heller, “But the excitement of this win was extraordinary to watch!”
On November 9th, the Dawgs were sent to the pound by the Ole Miss Rebels. Ole Miss beat Georgia 28-10. Unfortunately, many Georgia fans predicted this loss due to current issues with the quarterback, Carson Beck. The field was immediately rushed and hues of blue and red covered the bright green grass. Whether viewers were rooting for Georgia or Ole Miss, this game had spectators on the edge of their seats from the beginning to the end. Many North Atlanta students attended this game, including Junior Hanna Huckabee. As a Georgia fan, this loss was significantly painful to Huckabee. “It was cool to see everyone rush the field, but I cannot believe Georgia choked once again,” said Huckabee.
Although these colleges must cough up a massive amount of money to pay for the precious goalposts, it was beyond entertaining to see a new approach to fan celebrations. Whether their rankings eventually plummet, Vandy, Tech, and Ole Miss fans will never forget these astounding wins.
