My personal musical genres include hip hop, country, reggae, classical, rock, the list goes on. The one I am most unfamiliar with though, is female pop. While my sister tries to influence my taste by blasting tunes like “Shake It Off,” or “I Love you, I’m Sorry,” I remain uninspired. Today, with the help of my female colleagues, I’m going to give five popular female pop singers a chance. Below is my honest ranking of 5 female pop artists.
#5: Chappell Roan
A soft beat begins her song, releasing a vibe that relaxes me but alludes to more to come. Suddenly, a beautiful voice is released into the mike. Emotions flood my brain, sounds I’ve never heard put together before are put together. When her second song comes on however, it sounds the same. Blame me for the tame review, but her lame game is all the same.
#4: Olivia Rodrigo
GEEZ, my mind may not be able to handle much else today. Up and down, loud and quiet, ramp it up, then bring it back down. Passionate, loud, a hint of aggression, then a soft whisper. I gotta give Olivia credit, her range is impressive. But a few songs and albums later I’ve already grown tired. I’m as bored with them as I am with that raccoon who stalks me while I take out the trash. This might be a negative review, but I’ve pledged my honest thoughts.
#3: Sabrina Carpenter
Perhaps I am being ignorant or failing to see what is so great about these singers, but the constant changing of tone, background, beat, tempo, and rhythm combined with already chaotic lyrics makes my blood boil. Back to Sabrina. I genuinely enjoyed some of these songs. Now I’d never want to find myself on the side she is talking bad about, but listening made me feel like I am embedded in her life as closely as her mother is. I got this same feeling when I listened to Olivia… strange.
#2: Gracie Abrams
Simply stated, Gracie’s vocals are some of the most smooth and pleasing of all the singers I’m reviewing today. When in the right mood, Gracie would be perfect, just don’t rely on her to get you hyped up. With lyrics that remind you of a dark rainstorm, and an upbeat tune that feels like a rising sun over the ocean, a unique contrast is revealed.
#1: Taylor Swift
I’ve heard raving reviews of this one. I must also admit my background knowledge of Swift is extensive. I’ve heard multiple of her songs. I’ve even learned some of the words to her diss track “Bad Blood.” My own sister claims she is the “greatest thing that has ever happened to the world.” These may be overstatements, but claiming Swift has once in a generation talent is not. I’d even go so far as to say she is the best female pop singer of the 21st century. Swift wins it all. I get the feeling she does this a lot.
