“It’s a beautiful day to save lives!” The serotonin rushes while getting patients to the operating room, delivering new life into this world, and giving little Sally her first-ever checkup, there are endless possibilities when it comes to working in the healthcare field. Luckily for students at NAHS who have already figured out a “10-year plan” and want to be a doctor, Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) is the perfect club.
For many, HOSA allows high school students to dip their toes into the world of medicine. Exploring different types of pathways will aid them in choosing what they want to pursue later in life. This includes sophomore Mollie Teachy, who wishes to be a surgeon when she is older. “Though I think I already know what I want to do as my profession, being in HOSA helps me explore other medical professions to find what fits my talents and interests,” she said. “This club makes me more prepared for college and the workforce.”
Finding kids with shared interests is a great part of being in a club. Being a part of HOSA is no different. Vice President of the club, sophomore Elizabeth Adams, serving alongside Kenzie Hart, enjoys exploring possible professions but also being surrounded by those who also have a passion for being in the medical field. “Being in HOSA means to me that I can be around people that wish to work in similar fields that I also want to work in,” she said. “It’s comforting knowing that everyone else in the club shares similar goals and together we can support one another in achieving them.”
Those who are in the healthcare field give back to the community every day they show up to work. Whether it’s performing a life-saving surgery or a simple annual check-up, these compassionate workers use their lives to help other people live theirs. For sophomore Emerson Dunning, this is the case. “I want to be able to learn different ways to help others before I go off to college,” she said. “I want to be a physical therapist in sports when I get older so I believe that being in HOSA will be very beneficial to help me achieve this goal.”
Are you wanting to pursue a career in the medical field? Then HOSA is the perfect place for you. HOSA gives opportunities for high school students to explore a plethora of careers involving medicine while being surrounded by peers who have the same passion as they do. Make sure to stop by Dr.K’s room on the seventh floor to see these savvy soon-to-be doctors.
