As temperatures begin to drop, MTV hosts the Video Music Awards (VMAs) to commemorate and acknowledge the hard work musicians across all genres have put in the past year. After weeks of fans placing their votes for who they think is the best in the category, everything leads up to this one night in September. Between Addison Rae’s questionable fashion choices and Chappel Roan’s “fire” performance of ‘Good Luck Babe’, the 2024 VMAs was a “Night To Remember.”
Known for her mountain of crimson curly hair, “You’re Favorite Artist, Favorite Artist,” Chappel Roan blew away the crowd with her unforgettable act. While the 26-year-old singer won “Best New Artist,” her performance of the catchy tune ‘Good Luck Babe’ accompanied by dancing knights in armor and fiery flames dangerously close to Roan, her insane vocals and stage presence are what everyone is raving about. Sophomore Kairi Licorish, a die-hard fan of Roan was astonished by her performance. “Chappel’s performance was better than I expected it to be,” she said. “With the costumes and the set made her performance very entertaining.”
As the red carpet rolls out, photographers itching to get a photo of Taylor Swift, musical artists, and other A-list celebrities alike use this as a “runway” to show off their chic ensemble. But then on the flip side, some of these celebrities seem to not have a clue in the world about how to dress. Ryan Rogers-Givens, a sophomore at North Atlanta values fashion over anything and isn’t afraid to comment on tacky n’ trashy outfits. “Every time I see a swan I’ll think of Addison Rae, and not in a good way,” she said. “But aside from that, Lisa’s outfit was everything and more.”
For avid pop culture fans, the VMAs is a field day for them. Through popular new music and celebrities showcasing who has style and who doesn’t, the VMAs never disappoint when it comes to creating iconic memories that will last forever. Sophomore Mia Yoo is still mourning over Annita winning over Bad Bunny for ‘Best Latin,’ but still enjoyed the award show. “It was a wonderful portrayal of pop culture and the new artist in 2024,” she said. “Though Bad Bunny lost, the VMAs overall was still a great production.”
Ultimately, this year’s VMAs displayed amazing performances, recognizing strong artists who have been putting hours in the studio and finally being applauded for their hard work. After another year of the VMAs commemorating beloved artists, it’s safe to say that the 2024 VMAs will not be forgotten.
