Social Studies, the fourth least liked subject behind math, english, and then PE, but is it really that bad or is the quality social studies provided not good enough to be interesting? The NCSS (National Council for the Social Studies) takes a place in high schools through the students, advocating for high quality social studies and hoping to provide leadership, services and support to the teachers who teach it. Welcome Rho Kappa, the NCSS in student form is a club available for North Atlanta students to join and contribute to the cause, help inspire others to inquiry about social Studies even after high school and throughout their daily lives even if it’s not a passion.
Many North Atlanta students have joined this club, upholding the excellence, expressing and showing it all around the school. On multiple floors of our castle of a building you can find posters, ranging from topics about voting, learner’s permits, and even work permits. Helping our student body stay on top of everything they may be missing. From community service to social studies related events, Rho Kappa keeps everyone involved and makes a community that everyone can feel welcome in.
Club President Mary Woodward, explains Rho Kappa as a community built off of social studies, with a focus on politics. The club is beneficial to anyone who has an interest in it, no matter what side of social studies you enjoy. Every meeting the members get to talk and work, spend their time collaborating on activities and spreading information. The community even helps people progress, emotionally and physically. “I think my co-president Annie has progressed a lot, she’s been getting a lot more involved,” said Woodward.
Setting up new initiatives and opening new horizons are important aspects of Rho Kappa. By setting a strong example for students of North Atlanta High School, Rho Kappa is sure to make a change and prove the importance of social studies.
