North Atlanta High School’s first floor is home to a plethora of important things. The floor’s large and open hallways hold spaces for band practice, SAT’s, and JROTC. It is also home to the rifle team. Down the long hallway and face to face with the classroom is the shooting range, which most students are unaware of. The rifle team is a great component of NAHS.
The rifle team is an example of NAHS excellence. The team has made it to sectionals every year that they’ve participated, becoming area champions almost every year, only losing once. The ratio from 2018 to 2023 highlights that there has only been one loss. The only year we didn’t qualify for area champs was last year, however that does not take away from our amazing wins.
The North Atlanta rifle team does not face strong competition. They often go against schools that don’t have a lot of funding for rifles. Our Rifle team is only advancing and leaving them in the dust. New and upcoming targets are being put to work, an electronic set up, getting rid of more risk of anyone getting hurt which shows the shooters from their positions of where they hit the target, this helps them adjust while in position instead of having to wait until after shooting to estimate where most of their shots ended up. This is more efficient overall, as it helps them aim better without breaking position as well as it prevents them from possible injuries when trying to grab their target. In addition some new gear and we’re all hoping and praying for some hoodies to grace their presence, that way they can show off and be comfortable.
Rifle Team is a sense of security and family, as it brings people together and shows them a new way of community. Even those who aren’t interested or involved with the JROTC can join but it does have its benefits for those who do join, new openings for military colleges and it can assist in the action of gaining some cords. However it’s not only for JROTC, it’s open for anyone and everyone. “I never enjoyed sports until riflery,” said Charly Coleman. “It was something completely out of my comfort zone.”
The NAHS rifle team allows people to connect with one another, while pursuing their passion. Our team has shown that they have what it takes to pursue excellence at NAHS.
