As pickleball makes its debut as the fastest-growing sport across the country, many seem to wonder: do people care more about the actual sport or the trendy fashion? North Atlanta students were lured into the world of pickleball when a group of seniors created the official NAHS Pickleball Club. Although a large portion of pickleball fanatics range between the ages of 30 to 50, the game is becoming a hot topic among high school students. So, what is it about the game that captivates the North Atlanta students? The vibrant colored tennis skirts, or the sheer skill of the sport?
Many believe that starting a club can be tough. It involves steps like finding a suitable mentor, gathering necessary resources, and persuading people to join. But to senior Henry Katz, this came naturally. Katz had enjoyed playing pickleball for a couple of years before the idea took shape. When he thought of starting the club, he knew exactly who to recruit for the task: Alex Katz and Wilson Iwanicki. The three founders introduced the concept to the avid hula hooper and beloved math teacher, David Ehrman, to be their sponsor. “After that, we bought the materials and went out to tape some lines up on the court,” said Katz. “Before you knew it, we were ready to start the club,” Katz said.
The club quickly gained popularity as Seniors Mac Wickland and Max Fancher instantly joined the club after the team pitched the idea to them. While both had little experience, they were intrigued by the sport and excited to have another reason to hang out with their friends. They both had just recently discovered pickleball, as it is typically catered for older generations. For members, no paddles or gear are needed. Showing up and preparing for an afternoon of fun and exercise are the only requirements of the club. “The meetings are what I look forward to most in the week. I’m especially excited about playing in tournaments and competitions,” said Wickland. “Show up and you’ll have a blast.”
On the other hand, sophomore Samantha Salzman thinks she might love the attire more than the sport. It’s no news that social media platforms, Tiktok and Instagram, are great ways to spread information fast. While scrolling through the For You Page, people often come across a pickleball OOTD (outfit of the day) as Salzman did. To her and many other teenage girls, a sport is a great way to convince your parents to let you buy new clothes. Salzman bought a pickleball set for her dad’s birthday – mainly for her to use too. Experiencing college resume anxiety, she decided to join more clubs to become involved in the variety North Atlanta has to offer. “Even though I just started playing, I already love it. But, I always make sure to get a cute outfit on to make me feel good while I play,” said Salzman.
When looking for a place to see friends, exercise, stay fashionable, and learn something new, North Atlanta’s Pickleball Club is the place to be. The weekly club meetings are held at the tennis courts after school with a group of determined members and three welcoming leaders ready to have some fun.
