Dubs basketball has always been a major highlight of North Atlanta sports, drawing large crowds of students to its games. After last year’s season, athletes and students are excited to start the 2024-2025 season. However, the team looks a bit different this year, now led by Coach BJ Thomas.
After playing in high school, Coach Thomas discovered his passion for coaching. With 25 years of experience under his belt, he’s excited to begin his new role at North Atlanta. In his five years at McDonough, where he previously coached, Thomas acquired many accolades. He had 113 wins, two state final-4 appearances, two region Coach of the Year awards, and one region championship. At NAHS, he hopes to build on these achievements. “We want to be in the championship conversation year in and year out,” said Thomas.
Despite Thomas taking over as late as he did, he has already spent valuable time developing the team’s chemistry. Throughout June, returning players spent most days in the North Atlanta gym. The team also played in many competitive high school tournaments with some of the best teams in the state. They played at Georgia Tech, Georgia, Kennesaw State, and Lake point. The team concluded the summer with a favorable win-loss record. “I was very proud of the team over the summer,” said Thomas. “Especially since they had a very short time to prepare.”
When most people think about North Atlanta basketball, their minds immediately go to Coach Kerry Sarden. Last Winter Sarden shockingly passed away, leaving his team to finish the season without him. He was often remembered for being an amazing coach but an even better person. A family man and a huge Michigan Wolverines fan, Coach Sarden will forever live the hearts of the North Atlanta Basketball program.
With Thomas’s leadership, the team embraces new talent and fresh energy. Thomas brought many new players along with him, such as his son, Nigel Thomas. Other additions to the roster include Deandre Clarke, Mason Baker, Langston Jones, and Kai Bryant. With new and existing players redefining the North Atlanta basketball program, the team is looking very promising for the upcoming season. “The great things he’s accomplished as Head Coach at McDonough will definitely carry over to North Atlanta,” said Clarke.
As basketball season approaches, Coach Thomas and the athletes are looking forward to competing and growing as a team. Emphasizing hard work, discipline, integrity, and selflessness, Coach Thomas is dedicated to fostering both the athletic and personal development of his players.
