Sooo… who’s down to break? Paris made a splash this summer with the inclusion of new, head-turning events to its game roster. Skateboarding, sport climbing, and breakdancing all played a major role in captivating international audiences this year. In an attempt to one-up the new milestone carved out by Paris, LA ‘28, the next host of the summer Olympics, plans to introduce/reintroduce five sports: flag football, baseball/softball, lacrosse, cricket, and squash. The reception of these sports in the next games will set in motion the possibility of newer events in the future (which, duh, we all want); so as a quick little salute to the hopeful success of LA ‘28, here are 10 undebuted sports we think NAHS would dominate in the Olympics:
(10) Dodgeball
Warriors are fast (like c’mon, have you seen our track team?), no one’s doubting that. But dodgeball’s spontaneous nature highlights the importance of agility, flexibility, and quick reflexes on the court- all skills that the best of our best excel at.
(9) Pickleball
Bless the people who coined NAHS our first pickleball team. Despite the fact that the international Olympic Committee (IOC) hasn’t given the OK to admit it into the Olympic roster, we have high hopes for our group in the long run.
(8) Cricket
Bat-and-ball game? NAHS baseball. Boom.
(7) Bowling
Just for fun, y’know? For a sport that hones in so heavily on form, North Atlanta could unironically conjure up a strong, well-supported team. With pillars in plenty of other sports that rely on good hand-eye coordination, stability, and rigid balance, bowling could have a future in the NAHS/Olympics scene.
(6) Mixed Martial Arts
All we’re saying is that some of you could benefit from throwing a punch. Or five. Seriously. Consider it.
(5) Aikido
Shout out to Warrior wrestling! Even though it’s more of an obscure style of combat, anything involving grappling & take-down techniques would be a shoe fit for one of our strongest teams.
(4) Netball
The Commonwealth’s version of a basketball-volleyball love child. Unsurprisingly, nobody likes Britain enough to instate it as an actual Olympic sport, but the combination of basketball defense and volleyball play style tells us that (1) it’s fun, and (2) NAHS basketball & volleyball Warriors would have an absolute field day with it.
(3) Darts
Darts is a game almost purely made up of concentration, tactic, and golden hand-eye coordination. Despite not requiring much movement, only the most polished & precise can get it done. Our take? Easy gold for NAHS riflery.
(2) Lacrosse
Before we set off the lax fanatics by pointing this one out, lacrosse is set to make its first reintroduction to the Olympics in LA (which, of course, we’re all super hyped for). Given that we already have a team, it poses less of a hypothetical question as to whether or not we could organize into the Olympics.
(1) Ultimate Frisbee
We’re so good we have a varsity team. That’s it. What more do you need? But seriously, NAHS ultimate frisbee has long been undervalued as a sports club, but their high-stakes competitive run is SO not something to look down upon. Kudos for topping our list!
