In a year that saw the boys achieve historic feats, including an incredible 13-2-2 record and a number one seed in this year’s playoffs, the Dubs boys’ soccer team claimed another impressive region title this year. Following a down year in 2023, the squad cranked up the heat in 2024 and dominated, with a region-specific record of 5-1. Cross city foes were countlessly taken down during the season, with a huge win against Marist, a former program kryptonite that finally has been overcome. The staff and coaches alike are taking this accomplishment with pride and relief, as the hard work and rigor throughout the season has finally paid off.
On the topic of the coaches, the increase in success has not gone unnoticed, with a ton of praise being handed to the players. While the skill on the team is something that is truly undeniable, the staff credits the diligence of the boys ever since even the preseason process started. One of those who has taken high notice of the pure hard work our Dubs young men have put in is Head Coach Epi Jimenez. Jimenez, who is going strong in year 9 with the boy’s program, highlights this year specifically as one that has impressed the staff as a collective. “I’m more than proud of the boys, man. I can’t wait to see what we achieve come playoff time,” Jimenez said.
From a more squad perspective, the boys are riding off the high off the recent region win. It’s given the boys some much needed confidence going into the playoffs and thrown some swagger their way. However, even with such a large boost in morale continuously on the cards, eyes are still always on the prize: the state championship. In practices and games alike, the captains on the team have stressed the importance of focus and constant improvement across the whole squad. Senior Goalkeeper Keller Martin, one of the 3 team captains for this season, can attest to the stern attitude of the team and keeping the energy high and maintaining engagement. “The regional victory has given us a small glimpse of what’s possible, but we know we still have more to do,” said Martin, “We refuse to settle for anything less if we want to be state champs.”
Despite the region win, the boys are continuing to strive for the main target at hand. Next on the agenda is the Dubs first playoff matchup against 4th seeded Lee County this Sunday. Our boys look to defend our home turf with pride and plan to dominate in the fashion that they have worked towards, a task that would move them further closer to the bullseye.
