An unexpected force has risen to dominate the hockey scene in Georgia, securing the coveted state championship with a score of 3-1. The North Atlanta hockey team emerged victorious, surprising many who were unaware of their existence. Just two years prior, this team severed ties with Marist, opting for independence under the North Atlanta name. This strategic move allowed them to recruit talent from various schools, including Riverwood and Lakeside, forming a talented roster. Led by North Atlanta seniors Zach Miller, Charles Ray, and Charlie Rivers, this squad defied expectations with every match on the ice. With no formal practice regimen, their dedication and skill propelled them to hoist the state championship trophy, cementing their place in North Atlanta’s sporting legacy.
Zach Miller, the defensive powerhouse and captain of the Warriors, has left an indelible mark on the ice. With 11 years of hockey experience under his belt, Zach’s leadership on and off the ice has been instrumental in guiding the team to success. Reflecting on their victory, “Winning the state championship meant the world to me because we came up short last year, and I wanted it really bad for my senior year,” said Miller. As he prepares to continue his hockey journey in a men’s league post-graduation, Zach’s legacy as a determined leader and skilled defenseman will endure.
The Warriors were on a tear throughout the season, and much of their success could be attributed to their fearless goalie, Charles Ray. With a decade of hockey experience, Charles’s agility and composure under pressure have been invaluable assets to the team. With accolades like the goalie of the year award for their league, Charles is a force to be reckoned with between the pipes. “Winning state this year was very surreal and a great way to end our senior year,” said Ray, “After 4 years of hard work I think our team deserved it the most.”
Last but not least, Charlie Rivers is the versatile left winger of the Warriors who has been a consistent presence on the ice, contributing both on offense and defense. With a passion for hockey since 6th grade, Charlie’s dedication to the sport has never wavered. His favorite memory with the team was winning state as he found it both rewarding and extremely deserved. “Celebrating on the ice after the championship was an unforgettable experience and a testament to our years of hard work,” said Rivers.
As Zach, Charles, and Charlie embark on their college journeys at Georgia College, Purdue, and Georgia Tech respectively, we wish them all the success in the world. May their dedication and passion for hockey continue to drive them forward, both on and off the ice. To the rest of the team, may their legacy of teamwork and perseverance continue to inspire success on the rink.
