As the academic year comes to a close, the time comes to recognize some of the most outstanding students in the Class of 2024. Aside from star athletes and prom royalty, it is important to highlight one of North Atlanta’s top performers: Valedictorian. This prestigious title represents not only exceptional academic achievement but also leadership and dedication. This year’s recipient is none other than senior Janie Heller, who has not only set an example for students but has learned a lot about herself along the way.
The valedictorian embodies the highest standards of academic excellence, setting a benchmark for all students. Heller’s consistent hard work, determination, and intellectual curiosity serve as an inspiration to her peers. Reflecting on her freshman year, she fondly recalls the challenges and growth she experienced. During that pivotal year, she experienced her first high school moments on a computer as the world was shut down by a pandemic. Even so, she managed to adapt to the new learning environment and provide herself with the steps to virtual success. “I would tell my freshman self that working hard really does pay off,” she said. “Even in a pandemic, it’s important to keep up with studies and make sure I’m trying my hardest.”
Heller embodies a balanced approach to life that extends beyond academic excellence. Throughout her high school journey, she has demonstrated a remarkable ability to find an equilibrium between her schoolwork and free time. Balancing academics and personal interests is a delicate task, one that Janie has mastered with grace and determination. She understands the importance of dedicating time and effort to her studies while also recognizing the value of relaxation. “I was able to find balance by knowing my limits and what days during school I had free time,” she said. “It really helped me find time to relax and avoid overloading myself every day of the week.”
As Heller prepares to transition to college, she is keenly aware of the value of the skills and mindset she has developed throughout her high school journey. By carrying forward the skills and values she has honed in high school, Heller hopes to continue to grow throughout her college years. “I plan to keep motivation in college by making sure I spread out my work,” she said. “At Georgia Tech, I know the importance of ‘Work Hard, Play Hard’ so I definitely want to find balance while I’m there.”
Heller’s ability to find balance has not only contributed to her academic success but has also enriched her overall high school experience. As she prepares to embark on new endeavors beyond high school, her commitment to her craft will undoubtedly continue to guide her toward success and fulfillment. Congratulations, Janie!
