The slim 12-ounce cans filled with 200 milligrams of caffeine are twice the amount of caffeine a teen should drink a day. With that in mind, the consumption of Celsius by teens is not only shaking the country but also the legs of students. So what sets Celsius above the other energy drinks on the shelf? Why are students clearing those same shelves and what influenced teens to give Celsius a try?
For one, the company’s 21 different flavors; some sparkling and some non-carbonated are what appeal to students. The popular drink among teens rose in 2021 but its rise in stocks has been soaring since 2018. Its fewer calories and no added sugars interest many, more than the other drinks on the market. Sophomore London Sario spends most of her afternoons playing volleyball yet she drinks Celsius for the demanding school day. Sario prides herself on having a Celsius every B-day for a pick-me-up. Staying alert during the day is her top priority and Celsius provides the stimulation to do so. Before her introduction to Celsius, her main source of caffeine in the morning was coffee, switching from the taste of earthy bitterness to Mango Passionfruit or Kiwi Guava persuaded her to consume Celsius more often versus a cup of joe.“The convenience of having a Celsius in the fridge after buying in bulk is way easier than preparing coffee before school, especially when I’m rushing,” she said.
The common theme of Celsius’s likability is its flavors compared to any other energy drink or coffee. Sophia Campbell believes Celsius allows her to stay caffeinated throughout the day without over-stimulating her. Depending on the day Campbell will drink it for school or for fueling her extracurriculars. As a sophomore on the cusp of junior year, it isn’t out of the ordinary to need a little extra caffeine. Unlike Lodon Sario, before the rise in Celsius Sophia Campbell’s consumption of caffeine was nonexistent. “Seeing people have it around piqued my interest and I think it influenced its rise in popularity too,” she said. “Celsius is super convenient when you have it and my go-tos are Peach Vibe or Artic Vibe”.
The Celsius consumption in teens is blatantly clear, the popularity and unexpected rise of the drink created ripples in the energy drink sector. Their claims of its positive benefits to the body influence their sales. As high school students adopt Celsius as their main source to charge themselves, experts and concerned individuals highlight the importance of understanding energy drinks’ effects. That includes Celsius as it gains traction toward younger generations.
