Reckless driving is an epidemic amongst students at North Atlanta. I think we all can attest to cutting someone off or driving unnecessarily fast in the parking deck at some point. Maybe it’s the adrenaline rush, or for some, it seems to be the attention it gets them. Whatever it may be, it needs to subside. It has become too much. Maybe everyone’s New Year’s resolution should be to drive a little safer.
It is not always just the students driving ridiculously, parents are equally to blame. Maybe it’s the stress of trying to get their kids to school and themselves to work on time, but that is no excuse. Once, I was driving my friend, and as we were leaving the parking deck, a parent swerved in front of me. They didn’t even have the right away, and I just barely missed hitting their BMW SUV. They were lucky I had fast instincts. Dropping your kid off in the parking deck and blocking traffic needs to stop. There are so many areas you could choose that do not include getting in the way of other students and teachers. Please, pick one!
I am not sure students know that driving over speed bumps at 30mph is not good for your vehicle, especially if you are driving a little sedan. Car suspensions are not made for that type of abuse. Not to mention the safety implications of driving manically in the parking deck. You could seriously injure yourself or someone else. I think the sheer embarrassment of possibly getting into an accident should make you think twice before driving that way.
When you are leaving school at the end of the day, must you drive like an idiot? Is it necessary to switch lanes so quickly that in the blink of an eye suddenly you’re a lane over. That is simply ridiculous. However I do have to say, if you’re driving incredibly slow on Northside Pkwy, I am going to have to kindly ask you to please get out of the way. The speed limit is 45 but you must go 55 at least.
If everyone made an effort to make smarter decisions on the road, maybe there would be fewer close calls. Maybe one person would not need to go through two different cars while attending North Atlanta. I would be lying, though, if I said that I did not find the chaos slightly entertaining.
