I love hockey. If you had told 13-year-old me that I would be interested in hockey in a few years, I probably would have laughed in your face, but now that I have opened my eyes to the great sport that it is, I can say that hockey truly is a spectacle to behold. Nothing is more exciting than grown men on razor blades hitting a tiny puck into a goal while on ice. Due to me living in Atlanta, the presence of hockey is extremely low, so I’m writing this to show YOU, the wonders of watching hockey.
Hockey is one of the most thrilling sports on TV today. What separates hockey from other sports, is its constant display of action and excitement, leaving viewers entertained until the final whistle. While watching a hockey game, it is guaranteed that you will witness at least a couple of amazing goals, which may be a “spin-o-rama” goal, a toe drag goal from miles out, a slapshot, a one-timer, or even a lacrosse-style goal that looks like it shouldn’t even be possible. If you are confused about what these goals are, I’m instructing you to look them up on YouTube and watch them for at least an hour, just like I do.
Apart from the crazy goals and electric plays that occur on the ice, you are also bound to see some of the most electrifying atmospheric moments in all of sports. One of the things that makes hockey so great is the presence of fighting and having the referees not intervening or trying to stop the brawl. There is nothing more exciting on this planet than seeing a player deliver a brutal hit onto an opposing player, seeing a goalie reaching his glove to make an impossible save on a puck that was going 95 miles per hour, and then seeing a player light up the stadium with an overtime or shootout goal, winning the game.
Just like every other sport, hockey is also a blast to keep up with outside of the games. Even though Atlanta does not have an NHL team anymore (that’s a whole different article itself) it’s still fun to keep up with the league’s top teams and scorers so that you have someone to cheer for while watching a game. When the Stanley Cup Playoffs roll around, and the run for a championship begins, the atmosphere and pace of play in the arena elevate significantly making playoff hockey one of the most exciting tournaments in the entire world.
Even though it may seem ridiculous to watch a sport in a city that doesn’t even have a team, it’s crucial to accept the fact that hockey is one of the greatest and most amusing sports to ever be played. Next time you are switching channels on your TV, and you see two random Canadian teams playing against one another on a sheet of ice, you need to tune in.
