The 2024 Golden Globes—an annual celebration of excellence in film and television—unfolded with its trademark glamor and a fair share of unexpected moments. The star-studded event, held at the iconic Beverly Hilton Hotel, brought together the crème de la crème of the entertainment industry. The award show’s attempt to rise from the ashes was fairly unsuccessful, with low viewer counts and a nightmarishly boring host. It is time to recall some of the remarkable winners, the memorable moments, and the not-so-impressive jokes that left the audience in stitches.
One of the standout victories of the evening was the success of the film “Oppenheimer,” which took home the coveted Best Motion Picture – Drama award. The film’s immersive dive into the creation of the atomic bomb left viewers shocked and amazed. Director Christopher Nolan’s dedication to his craft was apparent in this film. The historical retelling played out over three hours on screen, meaning the film had enough air time to outdo any competitor in the category. “Oppenheimer” undoubtedly had little challenge in this dramatic category.
In the realm of comedy, the laughter and drama induced by “The Bear” earned lead actress Ayo Edebiri the title of Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy TV Series. The show’s impeccable comedic timing and witty script resonated with viewers, making Edibiri a standout in a competitive category. Although not a newcomer, her performance on “The Bear” has earned her much more recognition than her previous works. Her relatable character alongside her chemistry with co-star Jeremy Allen White added to her convincing performance that stuck with the audience. Edibiri has begun to collect accolades, as her new Golden Globe joins her Independent Spirit Award for the same role.
Typically, the Golden Globes are known for hilarious jokes during the opening monologue. This year, however, the jokes were cheap and uncomfortable. The choice of host for the evening, comedian Jo Koy, was probably one of the least entertaining parts of the night. His jokes were lazy and targeted sexism, causing appalled and unimpressed reactions among the audience. It seemed as though Koy was looking to recreate Ricky Gervais’s monologue from the 2020 Globes, but instead of crafting satirical gems, he spewed low blows targeting Hollywood’s finest. It is probably safe to assume that Koy will not be returning to hosting such important gigs any time soon.
The 2024 Golden Globes offered a delightful mix of triumphs and unexpected twists, creating a memorable evening for both the industry and its dedicated audience. The winners celebrated their achievements, the fashion dazzled the viewers, and the jokes, for better or worse, added a touch of spontaneity to the night. As the curtains closed on this edition of the Golden Globes, it left us eagerly anticipating the next chapter in the ever-evolving landscape of entertainment.
