In July 2019, Amazon Prime Video took our attention away from going back to school with the release of its new original series, “The Boys.” The new superhero – or villain – satire on American society came at the perfect time for those who were still upset with the ending of Marvel’s “Endgame” and needed a taste of the next generation of superheroes. While the show is also based on comics, the directors decided to add a twist to expose what money and popularity can do to people. That is exactly what the new spinoff/extension dubbed “Gen V” continues as it explores the complex lives of inexperienced college students.
One of the best aspects of the shows is their unexpected gore and plot twists. At first, I was not a fan of these things because certain scenes and cliffhangers caused me so much anxiety, but the shows would not be what they are without them. “The Boys” is much more graphic than I expected when I began to watch it. I thought “Gen V” would be a more PG show, which was a mistake on my part, yet it was even more interesting than its predecessor.
Another crucial aspect of Gen V is that it is not necessarily a spinoff but more of a transition from the third to fourth seasons of “The Boys.” Think of it as ”Star Wars: The Clone Wars” but even more important to the prequels. We got character crossovers, including Vought CEO Ashley Barrett, Congresswoman Victoria Neuman, and a few other surprise cameos. I thought this would be a series that would give me the same vibe as “The Boys”, but I could not imagine watching the fourth season without watching “Gen V” first. It had so many major plot points and incredible superheroes – called Supes – that may be able to stand up to even the strongest man on Earth.
Of course, this show is not for everyone as it is very graphic – though hilarious. Every extreme scene has one that compliments it and will make you laugh. While I am not a Supe, I feel like I can connect with the main characters and their drama. I genuinely enjoyed every single second. So if you need something interesting to add to your watch list, consider “Gen V.”
