Halloween is a holiday for all ages – but who does it better than high school students? In recent years, the weekend adjacent to the holiday has been dubbed ‘Halloweekend’ by the youths, and it is arguably more exalted than the holiday itself. There is no better place to spend the first night in this series of celebrations than Henderson Stadium. Last Friday, the Warriors faced off against the Eagles of South Cobb High School, and the costumed student section showed out. By 8 p.m., the stadium was swarming with every creature and character imaginable.
Among them was junior Katherine Hoover, who paid homage to the cult classic “Mean Girls.” Although she ordered her Karen Smith costume (a mouse – duh!) earlier in the week, its arrival came down to the wire. Mere minutes before she had to depart to meet her friends before the game, an Amazon truck took the turn into her driveway on two wheels. She quickly donned her ensemble – Karen Smith’s signature Halloween costume, consisting of mouse ears and a black dress with a sparkly bow – and sped off to the stadium. “I was so grateful that my costume arrived on time,” she said. “I knew I had to be Karen this year because people always tell me I look like her.”
Other students drew their costume inspiration from real-life figures. Junior Jack Schultz donned his idol Bob Ross’ classic blue button-up and curly wig. He was so committed to the bit that he carried a paintbrush around the whole game. Although to some, his red wig resembled rapper Ice Spice a little more than the painter Ross. Despite the fact that Schultz was asked multiple times throughout the evening if he was Ice Spice, he was dedicated to executing the look. “This costume is a Schultz family tradition! I found it in my brother’s closet,” he said.
While junior Will Boteler isn’t out saving the city as the friendly neighborhood Spiderman, he can be found rooting for the Warriors in the North Atlanta student section. Boteler found his costume at the popular holiday pop-up Spirit Halloween, which happens to be his favorite store of all time. “This isn’t even a costume anymore. I’m always wearing it,” he said.“You never know when you’re going to need to fight some crime.”
To top the evening off, the football team was victorious and trounced the South Cobb Eagles 49-0. Next, they face off against Houston County High School in the first round of playoffs, although no student section theme could possibly top Halloween costumes.
