As the 2023-24 season edges closer and closer, the North Atlanta track and field team is setting up for success. The first step of this process is to get the Warriors back in shape after a long off-season. In order to do this, members of the team will be conditioning in hopes of being back on top of their game by the end of the pre-season. This means that members of the track team will be participating in rigorous cardio to get back to their peak.
For outside track athlete junior Idris Fornie, conditioning has already made a noticeable impact. Fornie runs the 400-meter dash, so his conditioning will focus on strength, speed, and pacing. After hours of running and training, Fornie feels ready for the track season to start. “I’m feeling really good about this year,” said Fornie. “I’m aiming to set a couple of personal records and maybe even a school record.”
Opposite to Fornie, junior John Ramseur will be working less on pacing and more on explosive power. Running the 100-meter, Ramseur must focus on maintaining a high tempo pace for the best chance of success. As a multi-sport athlete who also plays with the football team, Ramseur feels tired but ready for the track season to start. “I feel like I’ve already been conditioning for half of this year,” said Ramseur “I could use a little rest, but I’m excited for the season to start.”
On the other side of the track, junior Reis Holzworth is preparing for shotput and discus, two events in track and field that require large reserves of raw power. In shotput, athletes must “putt” a heavy ball as far as possible, and in discus, athletes must throw a heavy disc farther than their opponents to win. Holzworth will be running with the rest of the team as well as partaking in weight training as part of his conditioning. “Conditioning helps more than most people like to think,” said Holzworth. “I think it shows who is putting in the work and who isn’t, and I want to make sure I’m on the better side of that.”
With the North Atlanta athletes honing in on their skills and working on becoming the best they can be, the Track and Field team is destined for greatness. With three more months left until the track season starts, the Warriors are sure to be poised, prepared, and ready to win in February.
