High schoolers frequently encounter the formidable challenge of standardized tests, specifically the SAT and ACT, as they pursue their college ambitions. From hefty textbooks and practice tests to countless online programs, there are various options available to students while looking for optimal ways to study. The abundance of choices can be both convenient and overwhelming, making it challenging to determine the most effective preparation tactics.
One fan favorite for those partaking in the SAT is Khan Academy’s program, which is directly tied with the official College Board site. Students can give the website access to their previous scores, and a custom plan is formed based on their specific strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, the program takes into account students’ next test date, ensuring the maximization of time and productivity leading up to the exam. “Khan Academy is definitely the most convenient and helpful study tool for me,” said senior Anabel Shelcke. “Studying without a designed program was overwhelming, so I am glad I found something so helpful.”
Another common and effective form of preparation is practicing with real tests from the past, many of which are provided online. Free of charge, students can access and print these tests to simulate the real deal and gain a more comprehensive understanding of their strengths and weaknesses in a testing environment. “I am a huge proponent of studying by answering real questions. It is the only way to get a real feel of the test and already be adjusted before sitting for the actual test,” said senior Portman Allen.
One of the more traditional study formats is using textbooks targeted at maximizing test success. This has long been a promising option for students, but some find it difficult to sift through the options and pick the “best” one. One book that has appeared among the highest reviewed and most effective is Mike and Patrick Barret’s “Black Book,” with separate versions sold for the SAT and ACT. It includes some test super tips, as well as a thorough set of explanations for the official practice tests. With this, students are able to get real-life practice and understand the reason behind missed answers. “I ended up trying out the Black Book for the SAT, and saw a big increase in my score,” said senior Alexandra Kazamias. “I highly recommend it to anyone who wants really good tips and thorough yet concise explanations.”
In terms of studying tips, the majority of students can attest to the fact that practice does make perfect, and ultimately, spending time and effort with these study programs will guarantee an improved score.
