Hidden within the bustling halls of North Atlanta High School lies a vibrant and tight-knit community that often goes unnoticed by the majority of the student body. For many students, joining JSU (Jewish Student Union) has been an eye-opening experience, revealing a diverse and welcoming group of peers eager to explore their shared heritage.
Sophia Rose, a long-time member of JSU, enthusiastically shared her thoughts, “I really love going to JSU because I feel like I often forget we have a Jewish community at North Atlanta, so it’s just nice to see everyone all together and have more people to relate to than I thought I had at school.”
For Sophia, joining JSU wasn’t just about connecting with her Jewish roots; she also wanted to get to know her Jewish peers. “Even though it’s only held once a month, it feels like such a tight-knit club,” said Sophia.
JSU meetings feature a range of activities, including making caramel apples, crafting matzah pizza, and learning the art of challah braiding. It’s also a place for students to come together and discuss their shared culture and experiences in a safe environment. “JSU is one of the few places Jewish students feel fully welcome and included,” said senior member Alexis Lubow.
Alexis, now a three-year member of JSU, stresses the importance of the club in North Atlanta’s diverse student landscape. “Because there is such a small number of fellow Jewish kids at North Atlanta, having a community, however small, is very important, and I’m so thankful to have this in JSU,” Lubow said.
The club’s inclusivity is evident in the leadership of its progressive Rabbi, [find out the Rabbi’s name], who runs the club with a focus on acceptance, education, and equality. JSU not only welcomes Jewish students but also those generally interested in learning about Judaism and Jewish history. Shira Leiba, the current president of the club, said, “It’s about understanding the culture of Judaism in a protected environment.”
North Atlanta High School’s JSU is not just a club; it’s a community that bridges gaps between cultures and generations while celebrating and honoring the rich tapestry of Jewish heritage. In a diverse and dynamic high school like North Atlanta, JSU stands out as a beacon of inclusivity and togetherness, reminding us of the importance of celebrating our differences.
