After weeks of campaigns and spirited candidates, student government elections recently came to a close. Efforts put towards brightly-colored posters and confident speeches have finally paid off, and those lucky enough to be elected will now turn their attention to the student body’s most pressing issues. Among the chosen candidates is junior Corinne Evans, whose quick humor and genuine care for her peers has won her a position for the second year in a row. This time, however, things are a bit different, as she takes on the role of School Vice President. Rather than representing just the Class of 2025 as she did in years past, she now helps oversee decisions made for the entire school. The sudden leap to such a powerful position has proven to be a big change.
Broadening one’s perspectives can be difficult, especially in high school. Even so, forgetting to consider anyone’s input is not an option for Evans. The job of vice president is more demanding than that of class president, in the sense that she now has to contemplate each grade level’s preferences as opposed to only her own class. “Sometimes I have to remind myself that I also represent people older and younger than me,” she said. “My decisions have to reflect the entire school and that’s been a real change.”
In addition to making sure all students are represented, Evans has been able to meet students she had never crossed paths with before. Since she is now a voice for everyone, her efforts have been focused on having conversations with students from each grade level, especially those she does not usually talk to. “Lately I have been really motivated to become familiar with every grade level,” she said. “It has been fun getting to know so many people who I had not met before.”
As she steps into the shoes previously filled by current President Luke McCullough, Evans has learned a lot from the advice of her superior. With countless projects filling up her already extensive agenda, McCullough’s guidance has helped her keep up with her new role. “I’m really glad I had someone to help show me the ropes,” she said. “This year I will learn a lot from Luke which will help me feel more prepared for being president next year.”
As students finally start to settle into the school year, the student government will have a lot on their plates. Even with a few changes, Evans is ready to take on her role as vice president, and she is sure it will be the best school year yet.
