For many athletes receiving one Division I offer is a dream, let alone 10. For Senior Kayleigh Stargell, that is her reality. Most North Atlanta students are spending their senior year like any other, with days of school work and college applications. Meanwhile, Stargell is off on college recruitment visits throughout the country lacing up for a big future in track.
Stargell began her running career at the age of six at Smyrna Track Club. A mini visionary, she’s excelled at every level. Her accomplishments are numerous, though they can especially be seen through her strong performance on the hurdles. Stargell holds a national record of 26.84 seconds for the 200-meter hurdles and was State Champion for the 300-meter hurdles in her freshman year. Not to mention she is a 15-time All-American. “I’ve always had this natural ability to run and I’ve dreamed of running in college,” said Stargell. “However I never thought I would come this far.”
Whether in Tennessee, South Carolina or anywhere else throughout the United States, Kayleigh lives in luxury as each college wrestles to have her on their team. As she is welcomed into each hotel, she is met with school-sponsored products and exclusive passes to food and team events. She tours athletic facilities and meets with athletic advisors, teammates and coaches. Stargell also gets to experience game days in the best way with pre-game passes on the field. “I’ve had so much fun getting all these unique experiences,” said Stargell. “It is such a heartwarming feeling knowing that colleges want me on their teams.”
The decision on where to spend the next four years is crucial for Stargell, as she will not only be committing herself to a school, but also to a team and family. During the recruitment process, she has had time to bond with the teams and coaches which provides great insight into the dynamic she is hoping to find. “I’m looking for a place I can call a second home,” said Stargell. “I want the track team to feel like a sisterhood.”
As North Atlanta Seniors race to the finish line, they will all part ways to their respective colleges. Stargell on the other hand, is sprinting, and no matter which lane she chooses she is sure to win.
