Would you rather be viciously sweating or have shivers sent down your spine? Neither sound like appealing options, but this is unfortunately the reality that Dub’s have to face everyday.
Throughout each student’s day, they go from class to class across North Atlanta’s eleven floors. Each class has a different atmosphere, not just because of the teacher and subject, but because of the inconsistent climates. When waking up in the morning, there is a constant struggle to pick out the perfect outfit that provides comfort and showcases individual style. For this reason, most teens resort to wearing comfy sweats or a casual t-shirt. Junior Maddie Aferiat feels for this and makes sure to plan ahead. “I always pack a sweatshirt on B Days,” she said. “Because Ms. Shilling’s class is freezing!”
While a freeze has taken over some parts of North Atlanta, others have become sweltering. These boiling rooms make it hard to focus and can cause Warriors to start to perspirate. This is especially prevalent in the gym, which is unfortunate because of the physical activity that occurs here. Many students give it their all in a basketball game, just to sweat through their clothes and go to their next class drenched. Students deal with these sweat inducing rooms in the gym on the daily. Freshman John Stevens can not stand the heat. “I wonder if these rooms will ever drop below 80 degrees,” he said.
These climate issues do not only affect students, but teachers are also influenced. Having to be in one classroom during the whole day has its obstacles, but fluctuating temperatures is one of the biggest. For the beloved IB Literature teacher Ms. Mills, it can be difficult to keep up with the ever changing, unstable weather. “The icy temperatures of the morning are quickly masked with the body heat of 34 students in my classroom,” she said.
As the weather gets colder, Dubs start to lean into fall clothes, such as cozy sweaters and fuzzy socks. These comfortable clothes can be quickly ruined by the heat of North Atlanta. The same goes for wearing shorts on a hot day and being freezing all day. The North Atlanta climate makes it impossible to dress for success!
