The wait is finally over: since the very popular sport of flag football was introduced as a new varsity sport in September of last year, many of North Atlanta’s female football phenoms have been aching to get back on the football field, and lucky for them, the program’s second season is just around the corner. With new players getting added to the roster, and the team’s hunger for victory at its highest level, how will this year pan out, and how can North Atlanta’s flag football team achieve greatness this year on the gridiron?
Last year, when flag football was introduced to the abundant selection of fall sports for Warriors to partake in, the coaches did not have trouble trying to find a team. Even with all the excitement last year, the team finished the season with a disappointing 2-8 record in its 10-game season. This year, however, the coaches and players are ready to bounce back and lead the Dubs to a victorious season. “This year we have a lot more girls trying out for the team, and the excitement for the season is higher than it was last year,” said head coach Ricky Plante, “We’re really looking forward to getting back onto the field.”
On September 26th the girls who made the cut had their first official practice of the season, and the focus was on route running and catching. Not only did this practice focus on the skills of the girls, but also the chemistry and the ability to jump into action as a team, to get ready for the challenging season ahead. As the team keeps practicing and developing an elite game plan to combat the opposition this year, it would be no surprise to see the Warriors having a very successful season this year. “We had our first practice today, and we looked really good,” said junior quarterback Vicky Carlucci, “Our receivers were catching almost every ball, and I could tell the team is really comfortable with each other.”
Due to the team only being two years old, North Atlanta’s flag football team will go into this season as the underdogs and a team that will have to prove themselves. Many teams the girls faced last season such as the crosstown rivals, South Atlanta High School, and Therrell High School started their flag football programs a couple of years prior to North Atlanta’s so in order to achieve success in this upcoming campaign, the team would have to prove themselves as contenders and that they can grow as a program. “The expectation this year is hard work,” said senior safety Heriot Parsons, “We have to work together as a team to be able to succeed this year.”
With the new excitement of another season of flag football underway, the Dubs are more ready than ever to get back on the gridiron and show out against other schools. With the team and the love for the sport growing as fast as ever throughout the halls of North Atlanta, it’s exciting to see how the team dominates during the 2023 flag football season.
